Planning for a Hot Tub Spa

Planning for a Spa

The actual delivery and installation of a spa is not too complicated (most of the time), but it pays to be prepared so that when the new spa arrives, it can be hooked up and ready to go.

Proper preparation and care of your new hot tub will give your family years of relaxation and enjoyment.

A few things to consider before you take delivery of a hot tub include:

Will the spa be located inside our outdoors?

How much space is available for a spa?

What is the size of the room, deck, or patio which will accommodate the hot tub?

What are the access measurements of door openings, fence, gates or deck stairs for getting the spa to its destination? Will the spa’s measurements ( length, width, and depth)
fit through any areas in order to get it to its spot? Will it pass through interior doors or exterior gates?

What is the weight of the spa without water and also the weight filled with water. Will any deck, patio, or room floor support the weight of the full spa?
When figuring this out, also account for the weight of the spa occupants in addition to the dry weight of the spa and the weight of the water.

Is there an available dedicated 50 or 60 AMP breaker for ths hot tub, or does an electrician need to be contacted to run an appropriately gauged wire to the hot tub from the panel?
Will you need an external GFCI with an emergency shutoff or disconnect as per local code? Be sure to  have an electrician prepare the site ahead of time.

Is there a water source available nearby to fill and drain the spa with a garden hose?

These are some considerations to prepare for before having the spa delivered.  Situating the spa in the right spot can mean more enjoyment in the long run. Avoid placing the spa directly under a tree that will regularly drop leaves on the spa.  For winter use, it is also recommended to keep the spa closer to the home rather than far off into the garden.  Having access in the winter will mean a greater likelihood of being able to enjoy the spa when the snow arrives.
