Hot Tub Maintenance Tips
Starting up a hot tub for the first time or on a new refill is easy. Here are some helpful maintenance tips and best practices for clear, clean water.
STEP 1: Use a Pre-filter when filling the spa for the first time and on every new refill. A Pre-filter can help get rid of many contaiminants and minerals in your water supply and start your spa off the right way with fresh, clean water. Also let the hose run a few seconds before attaching the pre-filter to get rid of stagnant and even rusty or dirty water that has accumulated in the hose. Do not use a water softner when filling a spa.
STEP 2: Test the fresh water for pH and Alkalinity by using test strips. Make sure you have the right test strips (depending on if you use chlorine or bromine as the main sanitizer). Never mix bromine and chlorine! The ideal pH range is about 7.2-7.6 and total Alkalinity is 80-150ppm.
STEP 3: Adjust the pH and total Alkalinity (using pH+ or pH-)
STEP 4: Assure you have enough sanitizer in the bromine or chlorine tablet dispenser and that it is set to deliver the desired amount of sanitizer.
You can also add chlorine directly into the water in the form of granular or liquid, although bromine pucks are the preferred method for santizing a hot tub as bromine lasts longer in hot water and does not off-gas as fast as chlorine.
Always make sure your filter is clean and replace the filter every year to year and a half.
